Review: Battleforged: Survivor
Author: M.H. Johnson
Rating: 2/5
Comments: This is by the same author as Silver Fox and the Western Hero. Even if you didn't know it going in, the prose style is utterly unmistakable. I didn't finish it. The author is clearly going to for a darker, grittier tone than Silver Fox, and the protagonist is apparently going to be skirting the line between good and evil pretty aggressively. That was just not what I was interested in reading. I'm sure it will do well with another reader, but this one didn't find it enjoyable and I stopped before the half way point. Hopefully I will get another SF&WH book soon.

Review: Silver Fox and the Western Hero 7
Author: M.H. Johnson
Rating: 4.5/5
Comments: Almost a year and a half after book 6 came out, we get book 7. Rumor has it that there was a legal kerfuffle with an editor or some such. Anyway the long wait is over, and Alex, Hao Chan, and the rest are back.
Johnson has a penchant for over the top descriptions and long rambling prose, and that penchant has not changed in book 7. I listened to book 6 before I read book 7 and holy crap, I forgot about the writing style. I will stick to reading it from now on so I can skim the rambling.
Regardless, it's a great addition to the series. A LOT happens in this because it's a whopping 1400+ pages long. It's essentially 3 books in one. So beaucoup! Anyway, if you liked the rest of the series, this will not disappoint and some of the nasty villains from old books show up and get their just desserts.
Enjoy!

Review: Silver Fox & The Western Hero book 6
Author: M.H. Johnson
Rating: 5/5
Comments:
At the end of book 5 Our Hero had beaten most of the obstacles thrown in his path and things looked like they might be taking a turn for the better.
Book 6 throws some new wrinkles at Alex, and some old ones, but overall he's starting to kick ass and take names, which is what we've been rooting for for the previous 5 books.
All in all, a great sequel, and probably the best story of the series so far.

So I took a break, then came back and read book 5.
I think this is probably the best book of the series so far. After 4 books of the protagonist being the punching bag and whipping boy, he's starting to come into his power and he can be quite terrifying in the right circumstances.
I am still marking the overall rating down for excessive navel gazing and exposition tangents and loops, but the POV shifts seem to be much more tolerable.
Looking forward to book 6, but I have no idea how long it will be before it's out.

I believe this is one of the more popular Wuxia books on Amazon. I avoided it for a while for personal reasons, most of which were disproven after I read it, so hey, my loss for waiting.
There’s a fair amount of confusing bits to this story, but it feels like stuff you’ll understand once you find out more about the world, and so far that’s been correct. If I had one complaint about the series as a whole, it’s that the author will frequently go off on tangents right when there’s action about to happen. So the protagonist is traveling along, thinking deep thoughts, and hears a scream. You will then get 2-3 pages of exposition about his deep thoughts, before you find out who screamed. I find that annoying, and honestly it only gets worse over the books. That being said I’ve binged the 4 books, and only interrupted them to read Aether’s Revival 3. Might go right into book 5, but felt like I needed to get this up before I forgot about it.
Addendum: He has a proclivity to throw in LitRPG elements to the story, and I really don't think it needs them. He occasionally dumps the "character sheet" in and that's up to about 4 pages now. It's to the point I feel like it's page stuffing for the sake of making the book longer.
