Review: He Who Fights with Monsters 8

Title: He Who Fights with Monsters 8: A LitRPG Adventure

Author: Shirtaloon

Rating: 4.375/5

Comments: Some have called this an "emo" book, but I don't find it excessively so.  It deals a lot with the psychological toll that all of his adventures have extracted from Jason, and his start on the road to recovery.  I think that the psychology angle of books is regularly neglected; because, really who wants to read about the icky bits when there is derring-do to be done.  But in this case it helps humanize someone who is becoming increasingly inhuman and unrelatable.  While all that is happening, he cracks jokes, has cook-outs, and is generally very Jason-ey.  A good ride, but all the cool characters makes things drag because Shirtaloon wants to give them all some screen time.

Review: He Who Fights with Monsters 7

Comments:

After some lackluster stories in books 3-6, which I liked but were not as "fun" as the ones in 1-3, Jason Asano returns to the magical world and it's a lot of fun.  I highly recommend it.

Comments:  The conclusions of the Earth arc of the tale of everyone's favorite irritating, yet hilarious, Aussie.  I know this arc isn't everyone's favorite, but I thought it was a good arc and the character development of Jason was well done.

I am looking forward to book 7, and I don't say that often.

Comments:  I could almost Cut/Paste the Challenger's Call 8 review for this one.  This is book 5 of god knows how many, but things are still progressing, so it is still entertaining.  Jason continues to be the same force of chaos that he's always been, but it's more a facade now that he uses as needed while the real person beneath has grown considerably.

I wish they'd come out with them more regularly since I know they're up to something like book 10 on Royal Road, but I can deal with this pace.

Review: He Who Fights with Monsters 4

Comments:  Another big chonky boy from Shirtaloon, but totally worth it.  I always try to finish these in one session, and I always fail.  In this installment Jason is back in Australia and he is the catalyst for a lot of change.  Well worth the read if you liked the others.

Review: He Who Fights with Monsters 3

Title:  He Who Fights with Monsters 3: A LitRPG Adventure

Author: Shirtaloon

Rating:4.9/5

Comments:

While book 3 retains some of the issues the previous two books had, e.g. serial format and pov jumps, the story really seems to be rolling.  I'm very curious to see what happens in book 4.  We definitely saw some significant character development among the core cast in this book which is great to see.

Well worth the read.

Review: He who Fights Monsters 2

Title: He Who Fights with Monsters 2:  A LitRPG Adventure

Author: Shirtaloon

Rating: 4.3/5

Comments:

This one was an improvement over book 1.  The threads that were so separate and unrelated in book 1 have been pulled together and things proceed at a brisk pace.

It's nice to start to see hints of how things all got started, what the greater conflict is.

All in all a fun story, and I'm glad to see it's continuing.

Review: He Who Fights Monsters

Title: He Who Fights Monsters: A Litrpg Adventure

Rating:4/5

Comments:

This was originally written as a serial on some web platform, and I hear it's still there.  That introduces a few oddities, where you get information repeated.  Overall it's not a problem.

All in all, it's entertaining.  The protagonist has a very definite way of looking at the world, but he's not one to "do as I say, not as I do" so he shows a level of integrity about his beliefs that you can respect, even if you don't agree.

Detracting from the story is the length, and the number of POV shifts.  Fortunately the shifts are short, and eventually tie together.

I am interested enough in where it's going to read the next volume when it releases this month, but I'm not waiting with bated breath.
