Review: Fight Town: Dedication

Title: Fight Town: Dedication  (Fight Town book 2)

Author: Hondo Jinx

Rating: 5/5

Comments:

Well I really enjoyed book 1, and book 2 did not disappoint.  This story is all about hard work, perseverance, and loyalty.  Oh and there's boxing.  I don't know boxing, but Hondo obviously does, and he makes it accessible and interesting.  He brings the fights alive in your mind.  Even better he really draws you into the moment.  I may have gotten a little emotional when Freddie has to dig deep for round 4 and gets some very unexpected encouragement.  You'll know the moment when you get there.  I've been in a bit of a reading funk, but this story grabbed me and wouldn't let me go.  Well done Hondo, this might be your best story yet.

Review: Fight Town: Inspiration

Title: Fight Town: Inspiration

As previously established, I like Hondo's work.  He typically has a certain persona for his protagonists that was consistent.  I say was because in Fight Town he breaks out of his well trodden paths and breaks new ground for his protagonist character development.  I'm pleased to report it works well and the overall story is very strong.  There are some points on the meta-story I'm not in love with, but hey it's not a deal killer and it's not like he's the first author to use that plot device so I'm only docking him .1 point.

Oh and if you are a boxing fan, you'll really appreciate all the time he put on the boxing details.  He might have gotten some things wrong, but as a non-boxing-fan, I couldn't tell.

Review: Wrangler 4

Title: Wrangler 4

Author: Hondo Jinx

Rating: 3.75/5

Comments:

Ok, generally I like Hondo's work.  This one just felt kind of shallow.  We had characters added to the cast with little development, and the big looming threat of the previous books was dealt with almost casually.

There were parts of it that were really good, but my impression after finishing it was that he wanted to wrap up the series in this book, and certain things were abbreviated to make that happen.  If you've read the first 3, I recommend reading it as it does give a satisfying wrap-up, but it's not the grand finale it could have been.

I'll just state up front I'm kind of a fan of Hondo Jinx.  I have read the first 2 books of this series and liked them both enough that I picked this one up as soon as it came out.  This is another good addition to the series, and I think probably equal to or better than the first 2.  That being said, he's not breaking a lot of new character ground with this, Braddock, Brawley, and Dan would all get along like brothers.  If you don't like Brawley and Dan, you won't like Braddock (and that's ok, I guess).

The Wrangler world is however a very interesting setting, and a lot of the stuff you kind of had to just accept in book one gets pulled together in this book and you find out some of the "why's".

Anyway, good fun, and I will definitely read the next book, which is allegedly the finale.

(For those of you wondering, it lost points for some gratuitous POV switching, and a couple minor annoyances)
