Comments: Path of Ascension as a series is starting to deal with the issue of dragging its tail along with the story.  All the stuff that has happened before is there weighing things down.  I mean the characters are still good, and the setting is decent but as readers we still want a new story with our familiar tropes.  For myself, in order for the story to be good, there has to be something new.  This one took a while, but it gave us some of what we want.  This book covers the first half of Minkalla.  It's an odd setting honestly, but the author puts some really interesting scenes in it.  I'll still be reading the next one, but I hope he picks up the pace.

Comments: After 2 pretty mediocre books this one is much more engaging with a much better story.  It's rare that a later book is better than the early books, but this is at least as good as book 1, and much better than 3 and 4.   If you made it through book 4, this one will make you weep tears of joy.  The various and sundry POV skipping is stepped up a bit, which is not necessarily a good thing, but I powered through.  Hopefully some of these threads that have been sown throughout books 1-5 will start being brought back in book 6.

Comments: So after 2 really strong books and one mediocre book, this one really didn't show much improvement over book 3.  It all felt like filler, with time passing but nothing of much significance happening.  Discussion on my Discord seemed to indicate that is the prevailing opinion, but that the next book is setting up to be a return to form.  I hope so, this was a bit of a disappointment.

Comments:  This book really should have been a 4.5 but I just couldn't do it.  The characters are GREAT.  Matt, Liz, Aster, Liz's parents, and the rest are wonderful.  We even get the reappearance of some past friends.

The basic idea of the storyline isn't too terrible either.  But oh my lord the "war game" events were just ridiculous, which is why it's marked down heavily.

During a discussion on my Discord about this, we calculated that a battlefront for the kind of battle that is described would be something like 103 MILES long.  I have a long standing interest in military history and the numbers given in this book are just simply not practical in the kind of engagements they describe.  At least in my opinion they aren't.

Anyway it didn't kill my enjoyment entirely, but it was definitely an annoyance.

Comments:  I really enjoyed this sequel.  There was no more PoV shifts than the first book, and they were acceptably short, and other than that quibble, I really don't have anything bad to say about it.   The character development seems to be progressing at a reasonable pace and the broader world is being revealed through the action without massive info dumps.

I will definitely read the next one.

Comments:  Another from Discord and it's very good.  Good characters, good twist to the power structures, and a generally decent narrative.  I have some minor quibbles, but nothing that will prevent me from reading the next one.  I think I even put the sequel drop date on my calendar.
