Blog mega update complete

Hey sorry for the long delay guys, this has been a busy month.  A LOT of really good books came out and I have been doing a lot of gaming stuff.  Here are some pictures from the convention I went to this weekend.

Review: Guardian of Aster Fall 5

Title: Path of Stars (Guardian of Aster Fall Book 5)

Author: David North

Rating: 4.7/5

Comments: I will honestly say I started reading this with some trepidation.  What I loved about the early books in this series was the interaction between Sam and his family.  At the end of book 4 Sam heads off into the Void by himself.  About the first quarter of this book he's effectively solo and there's a fair amount of navel gazing.  Once you get past that, and he finds other people, things get interesting.

All in all, I enjoyed the book, and I am really looking forward to book 6.

Review: Eminent Domain

Title: Eminent Domain: The Way of Etherforging: Book 1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09WGZ1XDX/

Author: RJ Shoke

Rating: 2.5/5

Comments: This book was recommended, and it has a 4.5 rating with 1000+ ratings on Amazon.  Despite all that, I couldn't get past 25% of it.  The protagonist seemed utterly robotic, and I couldn't find anything I found relatable with him.  Because of that, I just don't care what happens to him, or what he accomplishes.  So this is a big DNF for me.

Review: Pit Fighter

Title: Pit Fighter: A LitRPG Progression Fantasy (Victor of Tucson Book 1)

https://www.amazon.com/Pit-Fighter-LitRPG-Progression-Fantasy-ebook/dp/B0BPK8XW43/

Author: Plum Parrot

Rating: 4/5

Comments:

This is a fairly standard Isekai cultivation story, but despite that, it's fairly well executed so it's not a liability.  The story takes enough twists and turns that it keeps it interesting and just when you think you see how things are going to play out, things change.

Looking forward to book 2.

Book 2 comes out June 6th.

Review: Silver Fox and the Western Hero 7

Title: Silver Fox & The Western Hero: Warrior's Peril: A LitRPG/Cultivation Novel - Book 7

https://www.amazon.com/Silver-Fox-Western-Hero-Cultivation-ebook/dp/B0BWK98R6V

Author: M.H. Johnson

Rating: 4.5/5

Comments: Almost a year and a half after book 6 came out, we get book 7.  Rumor has it that there was a legal kerfuffle with an editor or some such.  Anyway the long wait is over, and Alex, Hao Chan, and the rest are back.

Johnson has a penchant for over the top descriptions and long rambling prose, and that penchant has not changed in book 7.  I listened to book 6 before I read book 7 and holy crap, I forgot about the writing style.  I will stick to reading it from now on so I can skim the rambling.

Regardless, it's a great addition to the series.  A LOT happens in this because it's a whopping 1400+ pages long.  It's essentially 3 books in one.  So beaucoup!  Anyway, if you liked the rest of the series, this will not disappoint and some of the nasty villains from old books show up and get their just desserts.

Enjoy!

Review: Jungle's of Alabama

Title: Jungle's of Alabama

https://www.amazon.com/Jungles-Alabama-William-Brown-ebook/dp/B0BV5NGHDY

Author: E. William Brown

Rating: 3.9/5

Comments:  An author that has been silent for years comes back with a new series. E. William Brown's last book was Thrall in the Daniel Black series, and it came out at the end of 2018.  So that's 4 years without a release.  Even G.R.R. Martin and Rothfuss thought he was done.  But no, here comes Jungle's of Alabama.

Most of this book is on Royal Road, and the actual e-book is not available in Kindle Unlimited.  I was pretty skeptical, but the parts on Royal Road got me to invest enough interest in it to buy it to find out how it ends.  All in all it's decent, and it's even a genre I usually hate.

So it might be worth your time.  Check it out on Royal Road if you aren't sure you want to buy it.

Review: Armsmaster's Summons

Title: Armsmaster's Summons

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BMZLQP4L/

Author: James Solomon

Rating: 4.5/5

Comments:  This book has an odd genre tag "Christian Fantasy" but I really think that's a bit of rating gaming to bring the sales rank up.

Anyway it has some very good world building and an interesting power structure.  The protagonist is a very relatable family man who has a very strong moral compass which I really identify with as a father.

This is a first book, so I hope we'll see a book 2.

Review: Battle Mage Farmer 4

Title: Fermentation: A Fantasy LitRPG Adventure (Battle Mage Farmer Book 4)

Amazon.com: Fermentation: A Fantasy LitRPG Adventure (Battle Mage Farmer Book 4) eBook : Ring, Seth: Kindle Store

Author: Seth Ring

Rating: 4.9/5

Comments:  The end of book 3 changed the goal for John Sutton and Co.  With the start of book 4 we start to get the lay of the new land and the new situation.  Lots of things change, and some kind of hurt.

There are some great scenes in this book which really make you want to cheer, and others that are very sad.

All in all, it's a great sequel and things look pretty good for book 5, which is out in May.

Review: Prism Academy 1

Title: Prism Academy- Inferna: A Litrpg Supers Adventure

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B54C4RQ6

Author:  David Burke

Rating: 3.75/5

Comments: Sometimes you just need a light popcorn read, and this filled that niche for me.

The amount of dramatic tension in this one is fairly low.  Our Hero succeeds at pretty much everything, and panties drop with the mere steely glance of his gaze.

All that being said, it's enjoyable popcorn and the sex scenes aren't ridiculously long or tedious.  The story is reasonably consistent and doesn't jar your suspension of disbelief excessively.

Review: Selena

Title: Selena (Would You Love a Monster Girl? Book 4)

Amazon.com: Selena (Would You Love a Monster Girl? Book 4) eBook : -, Cebelius: Kindle Store

Author: Cebelius

Rating: 4/5

Comments: Cebelius got his start with the Celestine Chronicles and he has lots of experience writing plausible human/non-human romance.  I think this book sets a new standard for making a character who deviates from human yet somehow achieves the goal of relatability.  He shows a lot more of the world of the WYLAMG universe in this book and it is pretty interesting.

The sex parts of this book don't really fall in my strike zone, but the story is very strong.  If the sex parts do fall in your strike zone this is going to be a 5/5

Review: Unbound book 6

Title: Expanse:  A LitRPG Adventure (Unbound Book 6)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BN6S7Q5P/

Author: Nicoli Gonnella

Rating: 4.5/5

Comments: There's a lot going on in this story, and unlike book 5 there isn't any annoyingly boring side plot.  There's still a lot of Sword of Damocles points which can be a little tiresome.  I want to feel like my protagonist has a choice, and constantly stating that they're only still alive because the big powers can't be bothered to crush them detracts from my enjoyment.

Despite that, I will be reading book 7.

Title: Revealed (The Jade Phoenix Saga #2) - A Cultivation LitRPG Series
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BTPRRK4K/

Author: D.I. Freed

Rating: 4.9/5

Comments:  Great story, I dock it points for unnecessary PoV shifts, and a few minor quibbles.

Several of the mysteries from book 1 are solved, which has some surprising moments.

It lives up to the first book, so if you liked the first, go read it.

Mega update engage! Review: Path of Ascension 2

Title: Path of Ascension 2

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BGJN8BV8/

Author: C. Mantis

Rating: 4.5/5

Comments:  I really enjoyed this sequel.  There was no more PoV shifts than the first book, and they were acceptably short, and other than that quibble, I really don't have anything bad to say about it.   The character development seems to be progressing at a reasonable pace and the broader world is being revealed through the action without massive info dumps.

I will definitely read the next one.
