Review: Proven Strength

Title: Proven Strength (Aether's Revival Book 8)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CV5TMBDJ/

Author: Daniel Schinhofen

Rating: 4.5/5

Comments: The return of the Greg and Yuki show.  DJ tells me it's his best selling series and I am glad because that means he's going to keep writing it.

In this book Greg reunites with Yuki, Jenn, and Mindy, as well as other old friends and after some buildup from the last few books we actually get answers to some long-standing mysteries about the story.  We also get a rather big curveball at the end which is not resolved.  Definitely looking forward to seeing how that develops.

As the 8th book in the series, if you hated it before, I doubt this would change your mind, but the series maturing nicely, so maybe if you were just on the fence with it because you weren't sure it would have staying power, that is not a real concern at this point.

Review: With the Old Breed

Title: With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa

https://www.amazon.com/Old-Breed-At-Peleliu-Okinawa-ebook/dp/B000VMFDW2/

Author: E. B. Sledge

Rating: 4.8/5

Comments:  I was in the mood for some non-fiction, so I picked this up because it was one of the sources used in the mini-series "The Pacific" and because I have been playing some Bolt Action with a friend of mine using Pacific theater troops and scenarios.

This book is considered a definitive work on an infantryman's experience in the Pacific, and it is a designation that is well deserved.

If you want to understand the overall tactical and strategic development of the Peleliu and Okinawa battles and campaigns, this is not the book for you.  As an infantryman, Sledge can only see what's immediately around him and confusion about what's going on is constant throughout the book.

If you want to know what the grunts in the Pacific experienced, even at a most cursory level, this will tell you in a clear, and evocative language.

If you have any interest in World War 2 or military history, this is worth your time to read.

Review: Grimnoir Chronicles

Title:  The Grimnoir Chronicles

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09WZX2268

Author: Larry Correia

Rating: 4.9/5

Comments: This series popped up in discussion on my Discord and since I haven't finished anything new, I'm tapping this classic for a review.  This isn't a new series, it's been around for years, but it is excellent and one that I have re-read and re-listened to multiple times.

It's set in a fictional 1930's where magic was used in WW1 and the world is a very different place.

I highly recommend it.
