Review: Mark of the Fool 7

Title: Mark of the Fool 7: A Progression Fantasy Epic

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CT9THG99/

Author: J.M. Clarke

Rating: 5/5

Comments: As a stunning contrast to yesterday's review, this one is awesome.

Mark of the Fool has always been good, some books are better than others, but no real stinkers, with consistent improvement in the story from book to book.  For that to be true over 6 (now 7) books is really remarkable.

The side character development is something where this series really shines.  Almost all of the recurring side characters have been developed to the point where you really have an emotional reaction when something significant happens to them.

Honestly the end of this book was some of the most stunning twists and turns I've found in a book in recent memory.

Highly highly recommended.

Comments: I like these books.  I think it's mostly because the characters have some depth, and realistic motivations.  In this installment a lot of the swords hanging over the protagonist fall, but the results of their fall is not what you would expect.  I am looking forward to book 7.

Review: Mark of the Fool 5

Rating: 5/5

Comments: This is one of those rare series, where the side characters are just as engaging as the protagonist, without overwhelming the protagonist's story.  Lots of great development in this book, from a lot of different characters.

It's pretty surprising to find book 5 of a series to be one of the best yet.

Review: Mark of the Fool 4

Title: Mark of the Fool 4: A Progression Fantasy Epic

Author: J.M. Clarke

Rating: 4.5/5

Comments: I'm still really enjoying this series.  There is progression, but it's a reasonable rate rather than a ballistic missile launch.  With the return to Thameland  there's a new level of tension as Alex encounters the other Heroes.  Definitely recommend the series.  Oh and there's a big freaking super golem too, which is still awesome.

Review: Mark of the Fool 3

Comments:  Well this is not the story I was expecting, but it's a good one nonetheless.  I thought with book 3 we would be heading back to the homeland to wreak havoc and have a grand time.  This is apparently what will happen in book 4.  Regardless, it's a grand time, and much havoc was wrought.  I like the way the author is able to show us the family dynamic and make it visceral.  There was an actual twinge of real emotion in my cold, dead, curmudgeonly heart at one point.

Go.  Read.  Enjoy.

Review: Mark of the Fool 2

Title: Mark of the Fool 2: A Progression Fantasy Epic

Rating: 4.5/5

Comments:

I read a fair number of "progression" or "cultivation" books, but honestly I am not sure why "progression" is a genre, since generally you want your protagonist to progress from his starting point to some better version of him or her self, otherwise, why are we reading about them?  Anyway, one of the pitfalls of this type of book is "How fast do they grow?"  Too fast and it seems to be too easy, and it's boring.  Too slow and too hard, and it is tedious.  Mark of the Fool hit the sweet spot and hit it hard.  Book 2 is also right in the zone.

Tons of fun, and some really good characters to care about.  Read it!

Review: Mark of the Fool

Title: Mark of the Fool: A Progression Fantasy Epic

Author: J.M. Clarke

Rating: 4.5/5

Comments:  This was a recommendation I got from my Discord, and my only regret is that the book 2 won't be out until next year.  It's a great story of being a "Chosen One" but being chosen kind of sucks and ruins his hopes for the future.

Some points deducted for random narrative wanders which are pretty much extraneous to the actual story.  Still great.
